Description

Maybe you’re lucky, and your finances are so simple a pencil and cashbook will keep everything ticking over and in the black. But if you’re like the rest of us, Quicken 2002 Standard could be what you need to get back on track. Quicken has been around a long time, but if you’re a newcomer, what do you get? Well most importantly it will pull all your financial accounts--current accounts, mortgages, endowments, savings, credit cards, property and the rest--under one roof. Possibly for the first time you will discover your net worth, plan a household budget, ensure bills are met and institute the financial discipline that’s the first step to increasing wealth.

Inputting account details is the first step (after installation) and is a real cinch. Depending on the number of accounts you have, you should be organised within half an hour or so. Once everything is entered you can generate reports, see where money is going by categorising transactions and check on the performance of your investments. And you can check that your ISAs, pension funds and the rest are on course to deliver the funds you’ll need in five, ten or 30 years.

Although Quicken 2002 Standard is certainly not a quantum leap forward from Quicken 2001, for existing Quicken users there are enhancements to tempt them to update--you can now automatically reconcile your bank accounts to ensure you have accurate information (no more poring over statements to figure out where that £19.99 went). Budgeting is now a lot simpler, yet more sophisticated--you can mix quarterly and monthly budgets, and Quicken will analyse your input data and use it to create a budget for you. And Intuit has made the program easier to set up than before. You might even start finding finances fun. --John Rennie
